The Goldilocks Zone for Productivity
I often experience fatigue due to extreme temperatures. Too much heat exhausts me, while too much cold makes me feel tired. Living near the equator, I need a temperature for work that doesn’t exhaust me with heat and doesn’t make me feel weak from the cold.
Why does too much heat drain my energy?
Your body has to work harder to keep you cool and hydrated in the heat, leading to fatigue. Some ways your body does this are:
- Dilating blood vessels to allow more blood flow near the skin, which releases heat but increases your heart and metabolic rates.
- Sweating to cool the skin, which can make you lose water and electrolytes if you don’t drink enough fluids.
- Repairing sun damage to your skin, which can cause chemical changes that make you feel tired.
To prevent fatigue from the heat, wear loose and light clothing, apply sunscreen, drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol and soda, and seek shade or air conditioning if you feel overheated.
Why does too much cold make me feel sleepy?
Feeling sleepy in the cold is due to a natural variation in temperature and sleepiness over 24 hours called circadian rhythm, not necessarily the cold itself. Winter is a dark time, so our bodies produce more melatonin, causing excessive fatigue and tiredness. Wearing a lot of clothes and cold-induced asthma can also make you more tired in the cold. It is normal for our body and mind to react to climate change.
What’s the Goldilocks Zone for Productivity?
The ideal temperature range to work productively is between 72 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit (22.2 and 25 degrees Celsius), according to some research. However, other factors such as humidity, clothing, body mass index, and age can affect how you perceive the temperature. Adjust the thermostat according to your specific needs and workplace conditions.
